What is an Instagram challenge?
An Instagram challenge invites people to interpret a theme or perform an action and share it through content. The brand sets the challenge; participants respond in their own style through photos, videos or stories, according to the entry journey.
A recognisable idea connects contributions to the same campaign. A gesture, object or situation can provide a common thread while leaving room for individual interpretation.
A challenge can be a community activation or include prizes. Where prizes are offered, planning must also cover regulatory assessment and entry conditions.
What can an Instagram challenge achieve for a brand?
A challenge can support brand awareness, community engagement and user-generated content, or UGC. The primary objective should shape the theme, effort required and how results are assessed.
- Build brand awareness. The product or brand world becomes part of the creative idea and shared content.
- Activate the community. People interpret the idea and contribute to the campaign story.
- Collect UGC. Photos and videos bring different perspectives to the theme. Reuse requires defined conditions and permissions.
Follower growth can be one indicator to track. Lead generation requires a dedicated data and consent journey in chat or on a landing page: a published post alone does not create a contact record.
How to plan an Instagram challenge
Define the idea, content required, entry journey and role of creators and the community. Instructions should make the challenge clear from the first promotional post.
Choose an idea that fits your brand
Start with what you want to communicate: a product, habit, value or relevant audience moment. The idea should give people a reason to take part and make the brand connection recognisable.
Consider the effort required. An action that is easy to show can encourage wider participation; a more elaborate creative contribution needs sufficient motivation and clear instructions.
Define content and entry methods
Specify what to create, where to publish or submit it, and what to include. Hashtags, mentions and formats must fit the mechanic and channel rules.
Set the dates, eligibility criteria and verification method. If prizes are offered, explain how they are awarded and where the terms can be found.
Our photo and video contest solutions offer different journeys. Choosing between social publishing and landing page collection depends on the experience and project objectives.
Involve creators and the community
Creators can interpret the challenge first and demonstrate how to enter. Select them for audience relevance and alignment with your brand’s voice, as well as visibility.
Prepare a brief covering the theme, steps to show and information to communicate. During the campaign, answer questions and showcase contributions within the agreed usage permissions.
A challenge in practice: Sammontana
For Sammontana’s Barattolino project, Webing used Webing Plus to manage an Instagram challenge built around the product.
Videos showed a Barattolino tub being passed towards the edge of the screen, as if handing it to the person mentioned. Creators, including Chiara Ferragni, interpreted the gesture in launch content.
The product was part of the action: a recognisable element connecting the videos while letting participants reinterpret the handover.

View the campaign’s Instagram content. The project shows how an easily recognised idea can connect participation with product storytelling.
Challenges with prizes: what needs checking?
When a challenge includes prizes, its regulatory classification should be assessed before launch. In Italy, the reference is the framework for prize promotions, with requirements determined by the actual mechanic.
Review participant eligibility, permitted content and prize allocation. Creative judging needs defined criteria; calling the campaign a challenge or publishing it on Instagram does not determine its legal classification.
Include channel terms and data management in the project. Our guide to running a giveaway in Italy explores decisions to make before announcing the campaign.
Managing content and potential reuse
Content management covers collection, verification against campaign criteria and permitted uses. Define these alongside the entry journey.
GIVEAWAI®, Webing’s own AI technology, automates UGC validation for contests and channels supported by the mechanic. Campaign criteria guide the checks.
For reuse, agree which content the brand intends to publish, where and with what permissions. Entry, content validity and permission to use it in communications are separate matters.
Also assign responsibility for moderation and participant enquiries. An organised collection helps the team assess contributions and document decisions.
How to measure an Instagram challenge
Connect challenge KPIs to your objective: visibility, engagement or UGC. Distinguish responses to promotional posts from actual challenge participation.
- Reach and impressions: how many people saw the content and how many views it generated, based on available data.
- Creators and contributions: how many people entered and how much content they submitted or published.
- Validity: how many contributions meet the conditions.
- Interactions: comments, shares and other actions on campaign content.
- Community: follower trends during the activation, assessed alongside other brand activity.
Assess how well content reflects the idea and which contributions can be used under the permissions collected. Volume and communication value answer different questions.
Your report should explain who responded, which content prompted entry and what could be clearer next time. Explore the KPIs for contests and giveaways.
